Tom & Rigi’s sunrise adventure began as a birthday treat and turned into a surprise proposal. Tom planned everything perfectly, from picking out a ring that had a center stone in Rigi’s favorite color to finding an excuse to conveniently have a photographer along for the ride!
Biggest tips for proposing in a hot air balloon
1. Don’t drop the ring. Seriously, please don’t. The pilot & I both had our hearts in our throats watching Tom propose and place the ring on Rigi’s finger. While it is always important to keep the ring safe, it’s much harder to find if dropped from up here!
2. Coordinate timing with your hot air balloon pilot. Tom & I worked out a signal with the pilot so he knew when to swing the balloon around to frame the sunrise for that gorgeous lighting.
3. Bring a photographer along! I am not just saying this so you might bring me on another ride – this is truly an adventure worth documenting! Please do also let your photographer know whether you have booked a large or small balloon. The basket size makes a huge difference for the best lens to bring and how much gear to leave behind.

One of the most amazing aspects of Tom & Rigi’s proposal was the absolute peace. Besides a little flame now and then, the only sounds were the newly engaged couple laughing and talking together… and yelling down to the houses when we were landing that she said yes!
